What To Look For When Buying A Used Car

Buying a used car is extremely common. It is a great way to save money on an otherwise expensive purchase. There are lots of great reasons to buy used cars, but you do need to inspect the vehicles ahead of time. The following tips will help you decide whether or not you should move forward with the purchase.

Make Sure the Brakes Have Been Checked

The first thing you should do is check to see if the brakes are in good working order. The brakes are vital to your ability to safely drive the car. If the brakes are worn down, they will need to be replaced. It is not a deal breaker if the brakes are old and worn down because it is easily solved. Even if the car has bad brakes, it might still be a good purchase. If so, you just need to factor into the rate the cost of the new brakes. Some service departments at auto dealers will even be able to replace the brake pads right there before you purchase the vehicle.

Shocks Are Important As Well

Another aspect of the car that needs to be inspected is the shocks. If the shocks are damaged on the car, then you should not drive it. Again, shocks that need to be replaced are not necessarily a deal breaker. You can easily ask that the service department replace the old shocks with new ones. This is going to increase the cost of the car, but if you like the overall design of the used car and the interior is nice, then it is often worth it to invest in the new shocks.

The best way to test the shocks is to press down on the car. If the car bounces slightly, then odds are that the shocks need to be replaced.

Check The Navigation System

The navigation system on your car is very important. Many modern cars come equipped with expensive navigation systems that include chip-based GPS systems. It is important that you test these out while driving the car. If the system does not work, then that needs to be addressed with the salesperson. Sometimes the chip is faulty and will not accurately track the roads. If that is the case, then you will need to have a new chip installed. The auto dealer is going to have access to the correct chip since they are not interchangeable and you cannot simply buy a generic one online.
